The biggest news in the world of politics is the fiasco of the Affordable Care Act, or “ObamaCare”. This piece of legislation is now law, but as of 14 November 2013, the president wants to delay the law another year so to prevent insurance companies from dropping their current customers.

This blog is not a rant on ObamaCare or the dangers of big government on America. This is a perspective on laws in America and how ability of lawmakers over the past decades to change the meanings of laws through corruption or whims. Laws by definition are intended to give society stability so that citizens are able to plan for the future. These laws are to provide security so that people are free from fear. This freedom from fear give people the freedom to act. Liberty gives this freedom to act.

It is through fixed laws, not the whims of leaders that a society is free. Those who are put in charge are liable to be corrupted by emotion, rhetoric, or ego. Laws are put into place to protect the whole from such corruption. There is the belief that laws are negative in that they restrict or prohibit citizens from enjoying freedom. Laws are put into place to ensure rights and protection. To have liberty is to free from terror and violence from others.

Finally, laws should not be so complex or massive in text that the average citizen cannot comprehend or become frustrated in not have the time to read it all. Laws are meant to be a rule of action, not a long academic exercise of legal jargon the average citizen knows little about. This has been the standard of our laws and regulations for the past fifty to sixty years.
